Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup split moong dal
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups water
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons cashews

Method

  1. Wash the rice and split moong dal together and soak them in water for about 10 minutes.
  2. Take a pressure cooker and add ghee to it. Heat it on medium flame.
  3. Add cumin seeds, black peppercorns, and curry leaves to the pressure cooker and sauté them for a few seconds.
  4. Add chopped ginger and cashews and sauté for another minute.
  5. Add turmeric powder and salt to the pressure cooker and mix well.
  6. Now, add the soaked rice and lentils to the pressure cooker and mix well.
  7. Add 4 cups of water to the pressure cooker and mix well.
  8. Cover the pressure cooker with a lid and cook for 2-3 whistles on medium flame.
  9. Turn off the flame and let the pressure release on its own.
  10. Open the pressure cooker and mix the pongal rice well.
  11. Andhra-style pongal rice is ready to be served.

Notes

You can add more water if you like your pongal rice to be softer. You can adjust the amount of spices according to your taste.
