Description

Curd rice is a popular South Indian dish made with cooked rice and curd. It is a simple and comforting dish that is often served as a side dish or as a main course. Curd rice is also known as Thayir Sadam in Tamil and Daddojanam in Telugu. This dish is usually accompanied by a pickle or a chutney.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of rice
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 cup of curd (yogurt)
  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon of chana dal
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon of asafoetida
  • Salt to taste

  • A mixing bowl
  • A pan
  • A spatula

Method

  1. Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Drain the water and add the rice to a saucepan along with 3 cups of water. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the flame to low. Cover the pan and let it cook for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked.
  3. Once the rice is cooked, remove it from the heat and let it cool down.
  4. In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves, and green chilli. Fry for a minute or until the mustard seeds start to pop.
  5. Add the asafoetida and fry for a few seconds.
  6. Add the cooked rice to the pan and mix well.
  7. Add the curd and salt to taste. Mix everything well.
  8. If the rice is too dry, you can add a little milk to make it moist.
  9. Your curd rice is ready to be served. You can garnish it with some chopped coriander leaves.

Notes

  • You can use leftover rice for this recipe.
  • If you don't have asafoetida, you can skip it.
  • If you want your curd rice to be more tangy, you can add some lemon juice.
