Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 2 medium-sized onions, chopped
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chillies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala powder
  • 3 tablespoons of oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups of Basmati rice
  • 4 cups of water

Equipment

  • A pressure cooker
  • A pan
  • A spatula
  • A strainer

Method

For Dal Fry:

  1. Wash the toor dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds.
  3. Once the cumin seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and green chillies. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  6. Add all the spices - red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the soaked toor dal and 3 cups of water. Close the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles.
  8. Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash the dal using a spatula.
  9. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once the cumin seeds splutter, add the mashed dal and mix well.
  10. Cook for 5-10 minutes until the dal thickens. Add some water if required.
  11. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with jeera rice.

For Jeera Rice:

  1. Wash the Basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Boil 4 cups of water in a pan and add soaked rice. Cook for 8-10 minutes until the rice is cooked.
  3. Once the rice is cooked, strain it and keep it aside.
  4. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Saute until the cumin seeds turn brown.
  5. Add the cooked rice and mix well.
  6. Cook for 5-10 minutes until the rice is coated with cumin seeds and oil.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with dal fry.

Notes

  • You can adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  • You can add some vegetables like carrots or peas to the dal for some extra nutrition.
  • You can also add some cashew nuts or raisins to the rice for some crunch and sweetness.
