Description

Carne frita is a traditional Puerto Rican dish that consists of fried pork chunks. It's a popular dish that you can find in almost any Puerto Rican restaurant. The crispy pork chunks are marinated in spices and vinegar, giving it a tangy and flavorful taste. It's a perfect dish to serve with rice, beans, and plantains.

Prep Time

The prep time for this dish is approximately 10 minutes.

Cook Time

The cook time for this dish is approximately 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. pork shoulder, cut into small chunks
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. adobo seasoning
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups vegetable oil

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Large skillet
  • Tongs
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the pork chunks, vinegar, adobo seasoning, oregano, garlic powder, and salt. Mix well and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the marinated pork chunks to the skillet and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Using tongs, remove the pork chunks from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  5. Repeat until all the pork chunks are cooked.
  6. Serve hot with rice, beans, and plantains.

Notes

  • Be careful when adding the pork chunks to the hot oil to avoid splatters.
  • You can adjust the seasoning to your taste.
  • If you don't have adobo seasoning, you can use a mixture of salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.

Recipe Tips

  • If you want to make this dish healthier, you can use lean pork instead of pork shoulder.
  • You can also use an air fryer instead of frying the pork chunks in oil.
  • If you like your carne frita extra crispy, you can double fry it by frying it once, letting it cool, and then frying it again for a few minutes.
  • If you don't have time to marinate the pork, you can still make this dish by seasoning the pork chunks with adobo seasoning, garlic powder, and salt just before frying.
